So before you get a dog, it’s great to do a little research beforehand to ensure that you get a puppy that best  fits your family’s personality and lifestyle. In this article, we’ve done all the research and put a list together for you on the top 10 best dog breeds for kids. Stick around until the end of the video for a bonus that you don’t want to miss!

Number 10: ENGLISH BULLDOG

English Bulldogs are best known for their devoted and patient disposition. They’re also quite affectionate and loving to their owners. Its sturdy build is definitely great for kids who are hyper and love to play rough games. However, English Bulldogs run out of battery real quick because they have low endurance. But on the bright side, you don’t have to spend too much time on giving them exercise if you’re someone that doesn’t have time to do so. Before you get an English Bulldog, know that they best fit temperate climates. They have tendencies to overheat when the weather’s too hot which in turn, causes breathing problems. When it’s too cold, they get chills. You don’t need a yard to accommodate this dog’s needs because they make fine apartment pets and are pretty lazy dogs. They also get along well with unfamiliar faces and other pets which makes them perfect for any social family.

Number 9: ROUGH COLLIE

Rough Collies are famously known as “herding dogs”. They have a graceful personality and they’re also incredible family companions. It’s a given that they’re highly affectionate, intelligent, loyal, and sensitive to their owner’s needs. Rough Collies are easy to train and because they’re so eager to learn and are active, they might need daily exercise. On the bright side, this dog breed will definitely keep your kids engaged. They also do well as an assistance or therapy dog and because they’re bred for farm life, they also make for a great watch dog. Though they’re a particularly friendly breed, they can be suspicious of strangers. However, Rough Collies aren’t aggressive but they can be a bit protective.

NUMBER 8: BEAGLE

No one could ever resist a Beagle’s dewy hazel eyes. They are sweet, loving, playful and outgoing by nature. If your Kids are an active bunch and like the outdoors, Beagles are the best companions. Originally bred as scent hounds, Beagles like sniffing anything and everything! Their nose might be the best part of their overall anatomy and this is why it’s common to see this breed in airports, most probably sniffing the day away. Beagles also get along with other people and animals which stems from their pack dog roots. They are hounds so do know that with all that playfulness, they’re bound to be a little stubborn. As a pet owner, you might need creative training exercises for them.

NUMBER 7: NEWFOUNDLAND

Newfoundlands are intelligent, sweet, caring, and loyal by nature. This is why this gentle giant will do great as your next family companion. This dog breed has a high tolerance and particular liking towards Kids so you already got that in the bag. Do you remember the caretaker dog in the animated movie “Peter Pan”? Yes, an actual Newfoundland’s personality doesn’t stray too far from it. They are even dubbed as the “Mother Teresa” of dogs.  Newfoundlands were originally bred as working dogs to haul firewood and pull nets for fishing so they’re incredibly hardworking too. They’re also great swimmers! However, if you’re a neatfreak, you might need to reconsider getting one. Though their thick and heavy coat is water-resistant, it is a dirt magnet and they shed quite a lot. You might need to allot a certain amount of money for grooming this dog because doing it by yourself is a daunting and tiresome task. But overall, they’re easy to train and you’ll have no trouble keeping this giant teddy bear.

NUMBER 6: IRISH SETTER

Irish setters are definitely one of the most elegant dog breeds there are. Known for their luscious red coat, this dog loves to be adored by people. They hate being left alone! So if your family works for long hours, it’s gonna be an issue that’ll cause health complications. Irish setters are actually on their best behavior when they’re in the presence of a family member. They are always eager and ready to be part of their loved one’s activities. If you have highly energetic kids, well then they just found a match with an Irish setter. Being the happy-go-lucky type, you can expect them to always be playful and excited. Other than that, they’re also easy to train and they best fit families with a yard because they do need a lot of exercise.

NUMBER 5: STANDARD POODLE

A Poodle might just be your kid’s next best friend. Their high energy will definitely be in sync! They are also gentle and loving, making them perfect family pets. Poodles are well behaved dogs that can transition from being incredibly active outdoors to being obedient and calm inside the house. This is a great quality that not a lot of dogs have. This flexible transition can even set a great example for your Kids. Because they shed very little, they’ll do great for kids with allergies.  Poodles come in three sizes: the toy poodle, miniature poodle, and standard sized poodle. The Standard Poodle is the largest, most energetic, and can withstand rough play so it’s your best option for younger and active kids.

NUMBER 4: PUGS

Pugs are excellent dogs for kids. Care-free, calm, and outgoing—all the qualities you want in a family pet. They don’t bark much which means that they tend to be quieter compared to other dogs. So if you need a peaceful space for little infants, this breed is your best bet. Contrary to popular belief, Pugs are actually intelligent. True, they’re not really fast learners but they do well at learning from other people. These furry buddies are also suckers for human affection so only get one when you have a lot of love and time to give. Because pugs are small, they’re a perfect match for apartment dwellers.

NUMBER 3: ENGLISH COCKER SPANIEL

English Cocker Spaniels are happy and affectionate dogs. They have a sturdy build, expressive doll eyes, and pretty curls. Known to be a hunting dog, they have quite a lot of energy and stamina. They’re also inherently curious and investigative beings. Though they hate being tugged on the tail or ears, their silent and calm nature keeps them from snapping at unruly kids. Though English Cockers are intelligent, they can be a bit stubborn.  As a responsible pet owner, practicing “Obedience training” is a great idea to make them behave and also keep them mentally stimulated. This dog breed barks a lot but they’re not the best guard dogs. English Cocker Spaniels are way too friendly and will probably lick a burglar’s hands instead of pouncing at them.

NUMBER 2: LABRADOR RETRIEVERS

Labrador retrievers are great pets for adults and kids alike. When looking for the perfect dog breed, it’s essential to keep an eye on aggressive tendencies. However, Labradors are genetically predisposed to be affectionate and even-tempered. They have great tolerance for things that annoy them and if you have rowdy kids, Labradors fit right into your perfect dog bucket list. On top of this, these dogs are also fluffy goofballs. They can be quite the entertainers! Because they’re always up for playtime, kids would definitely love them. Your little ones would enjoy playing fetch or simply running around all day with them. Labrador retrievers are also very social beings. This is why they’ll do well in meeting new people or animals. They’re also incredibly smart and easy to train. If your kids are hard to manage, at least you have a dog that can abide by the house rules.

NUMBER 1: GOLDEN RETRIEVER

Would this list even be complete without having Golden Retrievers at number one? Of course, you saw this coming from a mile away. For many years, Golden Retrievers had a taintless reputation for being great family pets—and for good reason! They’re smart, loyal, kind and confident dogs. As much as they’re obedient, they’re also very affectionate. They’re incredibly versatile as they can be gentle on little babies but can also do rough play with older kids, adults, and even other dogs too. Their sweet and adorable demeanor would make it hard for anyone to resist them. It’s good to know beforehand that like any other dog, Golden Retrievers have needs too. They’re not low maintenance dogs and they need tons of attention and adequate exercise. Fun fact, did you know that a Golden Retriever named Charlie made it to the Guinness World Book Record for having the loudest bark? With that you probably think they’re great guard dogs. Not really. While their bark can scare off a stranger by the door, as soon as that person enters the house, your Golden Retriever will probably hand them a toy to ask them to play. Overall, we’re sure that Golden Retrievers deserve their rank in this list.

BONUS DOG THE BOXER!

Boxers are people oriented dogs and they love attention from their human friends. Their caring, gentle, playful, and cuddly personality makes them a great partner for your little kids.  They’re also patient dogs so they’re great with toddlers who have a knack for being a little brash with their movements. Boxers are naturally protective of their family so rest assured that they’ll look out for your Kids.
